Manuel Agujetas – Entrevista

Mi padre no me enseñó a cantar.

Interview in English (En Inglés)

Manuel Agujetas – Interview

Parents don’t teach us anything. We learn by ourselves, listening. Gypsies don’t ever tell the truth about cante to anyone. My father didn’t teach me how to sing. Gypsies don’t tell the truth about cante to anyone. My old man worked at the forge, and at the age of fourteen I worked alongside him on another anvil. My father would sing seguiriyas as the iron was heating up because you cannot work and sing at the same time. The stories about the gypsies singing while hammering are lies, because you can’t. So my old man would sing seguiriyas, soon after my brother and I would come out and say: Not like that. “Hey, you haven’t done it like that”. “Well, now you can do it like that so that no-one knows.” And so it was at this point that it became true.

Without justification don’t sing, write or paint. Without a cause, there is nothing. A flower planted with love will not die; you cannot plant without love. There is not a single plant that I have planted that has not survived. My cause is justified, that is why I sing. The lyrics are born within. If this woman is not interested in me, then she is free to go. But if she loves me then I will love her. I will love her forever and songs about our love will be born in my heart, as and if she lets me, so will songs about our suffering.

I don’t know where I was born
, if I am Agujetas de Jerez, its because I was born in Jerez. Now I am going to look for my legal papers, but they are nowhere to be found. I would like to marry but there are no papers and they are nowhere to be found; I would like to marry but there are no papers, I shall have to register myself. Just as my father didn’t register us legally, I shall also not do so for my children so that they don’t serve any government. I don’t live like the old chaps, who have to rely on pensions and subsidies. I raise my children for myself.

They were true artists, but there were no artists because they were singers for the genteel, you understand? I never went to any of those parties because I thought I would end up in a bad situation. I was born with no control. I am very dangerous in those kinds of situations. My father would go his entire life because what were the poor old chaps going to eat? I once saw a poor old chap sing at one of these parties. The rich man asked him to sing, the minute he opened his mouth the rich man covered it. That’s not right. If a rich man were to cover my mouth, I would not only hit him, but I would also hit his mother, aunt and niece and that is why something like this hasn’t happened to me, thank God.

I was born free and I am still free.

I am Spanish, but I don’t care much for Spain. I don’t live off governments or off anyone. I am free, now and with Franco. “Long Live Spain! Even though the streets are full of lice”.

Okay.

Y es verdad que yo he tenido
Una quejita grande con Dios
Que lo que ha mí me ha mandado
No me lo merezco yo

It’s true I’ve had
a great complaint with God
That what he has demanded of me
I don’t deserve

Tú tienes que venir a buscarme
De rodillas por el suelo
Llorando gotas de sangre
Cuando vengas a mi puerta
Entra por todos los rincones
Y hasta el último rincón
Y verás cómo tú reinas
Dentro de mi corazón

You have to come searching for me
On your knees
Crying tears of blood
When you come to my door
Enter from all sides
Every last one
And you will see how you reign
Inside my heart

Tiene mi niña los ojos
Como piedra de molino
Que parte los corazones
Como granitos de trigo

My little girl has eyes
Like millers stone
That split hearts
Like grains of wheat

Yo tuve celos del río
La noche que te bañabas
Yo tuve celos del río
Y al agua desafié
Y tiré el cariño mío
En la corriente se fue

I was jealous of the river
The night that you bathed
I was jealous of the river
And I challenged the water
And I threw all my affection
And the current washed it away
